Believe it or not, weathervanes have an interesting history. They get their name from the Old English fane, which means banner or flag. Other times people use the name “wind vanes.” Weathervanes are known as one of the ancient means of forecasting the weather. They are referenced in antiquated writings from more than 3500 years ago. The Chinese spoke long ago about flags or strings being utilized to indicate wind direction.

Today, with the advent of computers and other technology, we undoubtedly take weather forecast as a given. Yet, way before modern technology came on the scene, weather vanes and other means were used to make forecast about the climate. It may not have been as accurate, but the traditional usage of weathervanes and other ancient devices unquestionably assisted civilizations with stabilizing their agricultural production and therefore evolved into today’s culture.
