The Ionic column, also known as the Ionic order, is traditionally categorized as one of the three orders constructed by the Greeks. Multiple structures can be viewed showing Ionic columns around the world. For example, in Rome, Italy; the coliseum shows an uncomplicated, original Ionic column that has stood the test of time. The Ionic Order is a part of the three well known traditional Greek orders.
The columns of the Ionic order have a flat narrow molding between every flute. The Ionic capital possess a distinctive group of scrolls, and Greek architects, due to the difference in the way Ionic capitals were perceived when standing, decided to curve the corner scrolls outward at a forty five degree angle. The finish was a variant on the initial Ionic capital, the Greek Angular Ionic. In fact, the ram of the Roman Ionic capital has more detail than many, making it one of the more popular capitals.
The Ionic order's most distinguished feature is the capital exemplified by two contrasting volutes. With sleek columns, they are at all times utilized with an Attica base. The column shaft, in its most advanced style, consists of 24 flutings, while there are three elements to the section above the columns, or the entablature. A simple slab, or architrave, normally separates the three bands, each protruding past the following band; including a decorative band along the wall, or frieze, frequently enamored with three dimensional art; consisting of a cornice, or decorative plastic molding, beautified with dentils, and a cyma and corona molding.
Another distinguishing feature of the Ionic order is the capital, that utilizes spiral scrolls, or volutes, on each side of the capital, going from front to back, and a rounded molding, or echinus. In addition, situated under the volutes, the Ionic column could utilize a banding to divide the capital away from the fluted shaft. Another possibility may be a group of flowers and fruits vacillating from the crevices created by the volutes.
